Energy flash: could Germany finally say Nein Danke to Atomkraft?
Chancellor Merkel could in the future be seen as a 2011 global pioneer of renewables, after she said recently that Germany's "energy supply can be achieved without nuclear power".
Let's just let those words sink in for a second. Germany:
A country whose population, at over 81 million, is the biggest in the European Union - a country whose population is over a quarter that of the USA....
A country with prestigious G8 membership - one of the richest in the world...
A country famed worldwide for its peerless automotive industry: BMW, Porsche, Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes...
A country whose beers are, alongside those of Czechoslvakia and France, among the finest on the planet...
A country whose collective personality is known for precision, organisation, efficiency...
... is going non-nuclear? Incredible.
Post Fukushima, the slogan "abschalten und umdenken" (Switch off and rethink") has a new resonance.
